Al Nocie
I’m an illustrator and teacher, currently based in Charleston, West Virginia. I’ve been working freelance for 10 years. My projects started as small commissions but have expanded in complexity to work, such as Book cover design, children’s book illustration, character creation, and large public art. Taking on commissions and developing my own independent projects gave me the practice to be a strong self-starter and effective communicator.
Clients include: A24, Echo-lit LLC, Positons Press, Marigold Creative Reuse Co.
My illustrations are rooted in organic forms, often beginning with the subtle rhythm of graphite or fine ink lines. I enjoy creating images sparked by articles and books, translating them into visual narratives. My portfolio spans a wide range of mediums and scales—from the handheld zine Interviews with Bugs to the 15×15 ft mural Lost Moon Holler.
Materials
Typically when I draw my go-to is a 2HB pencil of any brand. This, along with a 2H, 4B, 8B pencils make up my graphite essentials. There are some other tools amongst my kit though: Stabilo pens, Sakura Micron pens, Niji Watercolor set, and Prismacolor color pencils.
I no longer use Photoshop. My experience has led me to prefer Procreate for a more traditional approach to digital art. In my opinion, Procreate translates the nuances of traditional techniques into the digital format far more effectively. It is also much more affordable, if you can get a used Ipad which is what I draw on now!
